Impact and Sustainability

a. Impact:

The proposed DelPHE Link between Rawalpindi Medical College, Institute of Medicine, Tribhuvan University, Nepal and Institute of Health Sciences and Public Health Research), University of Leeds, UK will enhance the research capacities of these Institutions through development of a self- sustainable model to deliver the high quality research, teaching and training. It will also strengthen the institutions at all three ends by establishment of International links between research groups with similar interests through exchange visits between them and provision of long term courses in research methodologies. The faculty members of the Rawalpindi Medical College and Institute of Medicine, Tribhuvan University, Nepal will be provided the research grants who will conduct these pilot and exploratory studies in priority areas of health that will lead to expansion of these projects in the future on larger scale that will have significant impact on the health care of the community. The findings of the research projects will have impact on the clinical practices of the health care providers too and it will also provide recommendations for the patients and their attendants regarding prevention and early diagnosis of priority health problems. The institutional research capacity will be strengthened as majority its faculty members will be trained thereby enhancing not only their own individual professional development but also making them competent and skilled enough to guide and supervise their colleagues and juniors i.e. the Post Graduate Trainees, undergraduates in their respective departments regarding their dissertations and other projects. Thus the benefit of the workshop will not be restricted to the individual faculty members only but will benefit their whole departments.

b. Medium to longer-term impact

This research link will provide a cascade effect to development of research capacity not only to the health care professionals of various specialties but also to the undergraduates of medical college as regards the training and monitoring of the research. The findings of the research will provide important information about the commonly prevalent diseases, health delivery systems and effectiveness of various interventions. The findings will be crucial to provide guidelines and recommendations for the health care providers as their incorporation in their clinical practices will contribute early diagnosis efficient treatment and better prognosis. Research conducted will form policy document for the health care system as the findings of the research conducted will provide recommendations for the policy makers It will provide them evidence based data to formulate policies that are relevant to their own situations and scenario rather than adopting and simulating policies of the developed countries, which were suitable to developed countries only.

c. Gender impact

As regards addressing the issue of gender inequalities, this research link between the three institutions will train female faculty members in research methodologies and skills ensuring that at least 20% of the participants in the courses should be females. After the training in research the female faculty members will be encouraged to submit their proposals for small grants funding. An attempt will also be made to encourage female faculty members to apply for the training programs and the link will also attempt to bridge the gender gap by ensuring development of at least 20% of all Research projects, specific to the health issues of females and mothers. It will be ensured that at least one joint project of the three institutions related to maternal and female's health should be developed, approved for funding and conducted annually.

d. Dissemination:

The information produced as a result of the proceeding activities and achievable and achieved outcomes of this DelPHE project will be the disseminated the form of publications, conferences, seminars and as information on the websites of the institutions. The results of the studies conducted in the project will be published in journals and their documents will also be provided to policy makers and the health care providers of related specialities so that the conclusion and findings get their due attention and form strong recommendations for future policies. The course materials developed in this project for the research training and workshops will be provided to every participant of the workshops. The detailed document regarding the process and outcomes of the program will be formulated and will be sent to other institutions in their respective countries (e.g. Higher Education Commission, Pakistan Medical and Research Council, Pakistan Medical and Dental Council, Pakistan Medical Association in Pakistan and Nepal Health Research Council, Nepal Medical Council, Department of Health Services, Nepal Public Health Association and other medical colleges in Nepal) to share our experience with them thus enabling them to replicate such activities in other institutions using this as role model, for enhancement of research capacity in the country.

e. Sustainability:

The impacts and outcomes of this project will be continuously achieved, after the initial support and encouragement is being acquired through the DelPHE program by all the three institutions. Even after the completion of the DelPHE Program all the three Institutions will enhance and proceed with their activities and outputs, building up on the foundation laid by DelPHE. The research support units will continue their services even after wards as during the DelPHE period both the institutions will be striving for identifying and generating their own resources that could be utilized for paying the staff of the units themselves even after the completion of DelPHE program. Research support units, after three years of continuous experience and collaborations will also be capable enough to provide consultancies to various sectors or organizations for development and conduct of research projects. Once a team has been established with the right skill-mix to write research grants and deliver courses, Rawalpindi Medical College and Institute of Medicine, Tribhuvan University, Nepal will have the capacity to generate its own funds to sustain ongoing research and educational activities. Courses will be offered to all other sectors, which are likely to bring in more funding. Similarly with the help of established international research links, successful research grants can sustain the above intended activities. The proposed link will help in establishing a self reliant model that with the help of international connections and skill-mix will generate enough funds to sustain its activities
